How to Remove a 1999 Toyota Corolla Headlight Bulb

How to Remove a 1999 Toyota Corolla Headlight Bulb

The headlight bulb in the 1999 Toyota Corolla is a dual-filament bulb that supplies both integral low-beam and high-beam units. The good news is, you have to remove just one headlight bulb per side when it comes time to replace one. The bad news is, you have to replace it whether the low-beam or high-beam filament is compromised. The dual-filament bulb costs more than a bulb with just a high- or low-beam filament.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Small telescopic mirror
  • Disposable gloves
  • 9003 replacement bulb
    • 1

Open the hood to the 1999 Toyota Corolla and approach the headlight assembly from which you intend to remove the bulb.

    • 2

Remove the upper air intake tube on the driver's side (if removing the driver's side bulb). The tube is about 6 inches long; you can simply disconnect it from the tube assembly by twisting and pulling it with your hands to obtain access to the back of the headlight assembly. For the passenger side, no components are required to be removed to access the back of the headlight assembly.

    • 3

Reach behind the headlight assembly and disconnect the three-pronged wire harness plug attached to the socket of the headlight bulb.

    • 4

Pull the black weather seal off (by hand) that covers the headlight bulb at the back of the headlight assembly.

    • 5

Use the telescopic mirror to view the back of the headlight assembly. Inspect the retaining clip before attempting to disengage it. There are two sides to the clip on both edges of the headlight bulb. One has a screw hinge and the other has a retaining latch.

    • 6

Press the retaining clip inward on the retaining latch side. Once the retaining clip latch is pressed, move the clip away from the latch to disengage it, using the mirror to monitor your progress.

    • 7

Put a pair of disposable gloves on if you're intending to reuse the headlight bulb so you'll avoid contacting the glass with your skin. Oils and other contaminants on skin can cause the bulb to burn out prematurely. Apply the same respect for the replacement bulb if you're intending to replace the old bulb with a new one.

    • 8

Swing the clip away from the headlight bulb on the screw hinge and remove the headlight bulb.

    • 9

Replace the headlight bulb by reversing the removal procedure. The mirror will help your relatching of the retaining clip when the time comes.
